How To Make (DIY) Waterproof Lipstick? [3 Different Methods]
Your makeup kit is incomplete without a rainbow of lipsticks. Lipsticks add a fancy touch to the rest of your makeup. However, the problem that is synonymous with all decent lipstick is that they are not waterproof and transfer-proof.
If you have ever used lipstick, you must be familiar with the frustration of reapplying your lipstick after every sip of water or any other liquid.
There are several waterproof lipsticks available in the market, and however, they can be expensive. Thus, if you are looking for more affordable waterproof lipstick, you can make DIY waterproof lipstick at home.
This post discusses the most effective method to make your own waterproof lipstick at home in a few simple steps.
How To Make DIY Waterproof Lipstick?
Below are 3 different methods possible to make Waterproof Lipstick.
- Using foundation and glycerin
- Using foundation and aloe vera
- Using fringe benefit and matte liquid lipstick base
1. Make Waterproof Lipstick Using Foundation and Glycerin (DIY)
The base product of lipstick is the foundation. Hence, naturally, if you use a high-grade waterproof foundation, your lipstick will also be waterproof. The glycerin gives the right consistency to the DIY lipstick to facilitate application.
This method is best if you want to make a red waterproof matte lipstick that does not contain harsh chemicals.
Required Materials
To make a waterproof lipstick using this method, you will need:
- Any waterproof foundation of your choice
- Glycerin
- A small container
- Red turmeric powder
- Compact powder (optional)
Procedure [Step by Step]

1. Take foundation in a small container
You can choose any waterproof foundation of your choice. Take a small amount of foundation in a small container.
The container should be clean and preferably transparent so that you can clearly see the lipstick color. Stir using a small spoon or stir rod to make the foundation slightly thin.
2. Add color
In this method, we recommend using red turmeric powder as it gives a bright red color to the lipstick and is a natural product. Add a small amount of red turmeric powder to the foundation and mix well.
Once the pigment is mixed completely, the resultant color will be the color of your DIY lipstick. If you feel that the color is light, you can add more red turmeric powder. Conversely, if you feel the color is too dark, you can add a little compact powder to make the color light.

At this point, the foundation and pigment mixture will start to thicken. To create a more smooth and even consistency, add one or two drops of glycerin to the mixture and mix well. Glycerin will not only facilitate application but also moisturize your lips.
After adding glycerin, you can leave the mixture in the fridge for it to set. And you have a DIY waterproof red matte lipstick ready to be used on special occasions.

2. Make Waterproof Lipstick Using Foundation and Aloe Vera (DIY)
Similar to the first method, if you want to make a waterproof lipstick, you have to use a waterproof foundation as the base.
The waterproof foundation will have good coverage and adherence, thereby preventing the lipstick from wearing off every time you drink any liquid. Aloe vera adds gloss to the foundation. Hence, this method is best for making a gloss waterproof lipstick.
Required Materials
- Waterproof foundation
- Aloe vera gel
- Vitamin E
- Eye shadow palette for color
- A small container
Procedure [Step by Step]
1. Take foundation in a small container
Take waterproof foundation in a small container as much as you need and stir using a stir rod, small spoon, or finger if you are okay with a little mess.
2. Add aloe vera gel
Add only a small amount of aloe vera gel to the foundation and mix well until no aloe vera lumps are left. You can easily purchase aloe vera gel online or from a local cosmetic store. Now the foundation will become shinier and smoother.
3. Add vitamin E
Now add two to three drops of vitamin E oil to the mixture and mix using a small spoon or stir rod. You can use vitamin E serums or oil or break open a vitamin E capsule.
4. Add color
The last step is adding color to the mixture; you can use an eye shadow palette for this purpose. You can easily purchase an eye shadow palette online. Just choose the color of your wish and add it to the foundation.
Mix well until the mixture has the color you desire, then leave the mixture to set, and your waterproof gloss lipstick is ready to use. If you wish, you can transfer the DIY lipstick to an empty lipstick container.
Precautions
Do not add too much Vitamin E otherwise, the mixture will have trouble drying.
3. Make Waterproof Lipstick Using Fringe Benefit and Matte Liquid Lipstick Base (DIY)
If you want to use a more professional method to make a waterproof matte liquid lipstick at home, then this method will work the best for you.
In this method, we use fringe benefit, which acts as a primer. This primer serves two purposes: it makes it easy to apply on the lips and is waterproof and transfer-proof.
Required Materials
- Mineral blending knife
- Blending paper
- Dash measuring spoon
- Teaspoon measuring spoon
- A small beaker or container
- Spade shape spatula (optional)
- Stir rod
- 100% pure mineral pigment
- Hydrator
- Fringe benefit
- Soothing botanical
- Matte liquid lipstick base
Procedure [Step by Step]

1. Take pure mineral pigment on blending paper
Mineral pigments are available in multiple colors, and you can purchase the pigment of your choice, and you can even combine two different pigments to create a custom shade.
Take three dashes of pigment or as per your requirements on a blending paper. If you are taking two different pigments, use the spade shape spatula to mix the colors together until you get a uniform color throughout.
2. Transfer to the beaker
Transfer the pigment to the beaker. You can use the spatula to transfer the contents or fold the blending paper in half and pour the content into the beaker.
3. Add hydrator and ultra-soothing botanicals
Now add three to four ml of hydrator to the pigment. The hydrator will add the moisturizing ability to the pigment required for the lips without adding any gloss to it. Then add three ml of ultra-soothing botanicals and mix well using a stir rod.
Since lips are very sensitive, some components may cause irritation, adding soothing botanicals will help soothe any irritations.
